Shell Mold

    0.01 sec.
Shell Mold

(also, investment mold), a special type of foundry mold made of a thin shell of molding mixture that is applied directly to the model. As a result, the consumption of molding material is reduced and the path of gases released from the mold is shortened. This reduces the danger of the formation of gas cavities in castings. Shell molds are used to produce castings by a method called shell molding. They are also used in the lost-wax process.

EXPERIMENTAL Shell Mold Fabrication An ultraprecision machining process involving slow tool servo control and single-point diamond cutters was used for the fabrication of shell molds.
The complicated process involves making an original sculpted object in wax or other material, encasing the wax in a high-temperature ceramic shell, and then heating the ceramic shell mold to melt out the wax so molten metal can then be poured into the cavity.
