On the northeastern border of VA, northeast of Harrisonburg; organized as Dunmore County May 15, 1772 from Frederick County; name changed 1778. Name Origin: For the Shenandoah River.

Area (sq mi): 512.53 (land 512.20; water 0.32). Pop per sq mi: 76.50.
Pop 2005: 39,184. State rank: 43. Pop change: 2000-20005 11.70%; 1990-2000 10.90%. Pop 2000: 35,075 (White 94.20%; Black or African American 1.20%; Hispanic or Latino 3.40%; Asian 0.30%; Other 2.90%). Foreign born: 3.10%. Median age: 40.90.
Income 2000: per capita $19,755; median household $39,173; Pop below poverty level: 8.20%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $23,805-$25,219.
