Shepard, Anna Osler

Shepard, Anna Osler (1903–73) ceramist; born in Merchantville, N.J. She was largely a self-taught expert on prehistoric ceramics who was affiliated with the Carnegie Institution and the U.S. Geological Survey. She performed rigorous scientific analyses of pottery from the American Southwest and Mesoamerica, often with controversial results. Her books include the standard Ceramics for the Archaeologist (1957).
