Shepard, Francis Parker
Born May 10, 1897, in Brookline, Mass. American geologist; one of the founders of modern marine geology. Doctor of philosophy (1922). Shepard graduated from Harvard University in 1919. He became a professor of geology at the University of Illinois in Chicago in 1939. Beginning in 1942, he worked at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla (University of California at San Diego) and at various scientific institutions of the US Navy. Between 1951 and 1958 he directed a long-term study of the sediments of the Gulf of Mexico conducted by the American Petroleum Institute.
