On the northwestern border of KS; organized Mar 20, 1873 from Kirwin Land District. Name Origin: For Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman (1820-91), officer in the Mexican-American War and the Civil War, leader of the "march to the sea" through the Southern states; remembered for the statement "War is hell."
