Sherry, Louis (1856–1926) restaurateur; probably born in St. Albans, Vt. After working in hotels, he opened his first New York City restaurant (1881). Renowned for its attention to detail and meticulous service in rooms hung with tapestries and oil paintings, Sherry's served New York's elite until Prohibition (1919), when he shifted to catering and confectionery.
