Shmidt, Aleksandr Eduardovich
Born Mar. 12,1871, in Astrakhan; died Aug. 9 or 15, 1939, in Tashkent. Soviet Ara-bist and Islamic scholar. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1925). Shmidt graduated from the department of Eastern languages of the University of St. Petersburg in 1894 and taught Arabic literature there for more than 20 years, becoming a professor in 1917. From 1920 to 1924 he was rector of the Turkestan Oriental Institute in Tashkent. In 1924, after the institute was reorganized into the Oriental department of the University of Tashkent, he became dean of the department. His main works were on the history of Islam.
