Sholes, Christopher

Sholes, Christopher (Latham) (1819–90) printer, inventor; born in Mooresburg, Pa. He learned the printer's trade in Pennsylvania before migrating to Wisconsin, where he edited newspapers in Madison and Milwaukee. He designed and patented a typewriter in 1868 and sold the rights to the Remington Arms Company five years later. By 1876 Remington was manufacturing and marketing typewriters under its own name.
