Honoring the best in Jewish children's literature, the 2006 Sydney Taylor Book Awards were presented to Sholom's Treasure: How Sholom Aleichem Became a Writer (Farrar) by Erica Silverman and illustrated by Mordicai Gerstein in the younger readers category; and Confessions of a Closet Catholic (Dutton) by Sarah Darer Littman in the older readers category.
But if Fiddler on the Roof can subtract two of Tevye's daughters from the seven Sholom Aleichem had given him, then why shouldn't Shadowlands subtract one from Joy?
Complete with costumes, props and lyrics, the audience will have a chance to show off their melodic talents by singing along with an open-captioned version of selected scenes from the 1971 Oscar-winning musical film adaptation based on the stories of Sholom Aleichem about a poor milkman whose love, pride and faith help him face the oppression of turn-of-the-century czarist Russia.
