The simplest of vehicles, its frame consists merely of crossed wooden stakes or a box with shafts as an extension of the frame. It took three years for Councilman Tony Cardenas to realize his promise to crack down on the clutter of abandoned shopping carts wasn't working. Everything under the sun: beds on wheels, dancers with skateboards strapped to their bellies, 100 cyclists biking in circles, children holding umbrellas, shopping carts filled with electronic equipment, and a wading pool. The company, launched at the Idealab business incubator, has inked deals with five supermarket chains to test LaneHawk, which uses pattern recognition technology to detect six-packs of Coke, dog food and other goods stashed away in the underbellies of shopping carts. |
