Shouse, Jouett

Shouse, Jouett (1879–1968) U.S. representative; born in Woodford County, Ky. A journalist and businessman active in Democratic politics, he served in the Kansas state legislature before going to the U.S. House of Representatives (1915–19) where he sponsored the Federal Farm Loan Act of 1916. Returning to business, he reluctantly became chairman of the Democratic National Committee in 1929, masterminding a Democratic congressional victory. Passed over by Franklin Roosevelt in 1932, he joined the conservative American Liberty League and bred horses in Kentucky.
