Shreve, R. Norris (1885–1975) chemical engineer, educator; born in St. Louis, Mo. He became affiliated with Purdue University's School of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering (1930–61), becoming its head (1947–51). During World War II he was involved in the Manhattan Project to produce the atomic bomb. Specializing in the manufacture of dyes, he served as technical director of or consultant to numerous chemical companies.
