Shtelling, Eduard Vasil’evich
Born Apr. 28, 1850; died July 2,1922. Russian geophysicist. Corresponding member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1901). Shtelling joined the staff of the Main Physical Observatory in 1874. In 1885 he was named director of the Irkutsk Magnetic and Meteorological Observatory, which he used as a base in organizing a network of meteorological stations in Siberia. Between 1897 and 1917, Shtelling was assistant director of the Main Physical Observatory and head of its division of climatology. Shtelling’s works dealt with climatology and terrestrial magnetism; he advanced an empirical formula for calculating evaporation from the surface of a water body. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
