Born in Okinawa in 1868, he began his karate training with Yasutsune Azato, who taught him shuri te, and Yasutune Itosu, a master of naha te.
Mimicking his master, priest Joei Yoshikuni, a 1 1/2 - year-old black-and-white Chihuahua, named Conan, joins in the daily prayers at Naha's Shuri Kannondo temple, sitting up on his hind legs and putting his front paws together before the altar.
The larger and more famous of the two is Okinawa's Shuri Castle, home to the kings of the Ryukyu Kingdom from the 15th to the 19th Century.
