Shuster, George (Nauman) (1894–1977) writer, educator; born in Lancaster, Wis. An English professor at Notre Dame (1920–24) and St. Joseph's College for Women (1925–35), he was managing editor of the lay Catholic magazine Commonweal (1929–37), before resigning after controversy over his criticisms of the Franco regime in Spain. He wrote fiction and essays on literature, religion, and European affairs, but gained his widest reputation as president of Hunter College (1940–60).
