Shymkent

Shymkent (shĭmkĕnt`) or Chimkent (chĭmkyĕnt`), city (1993 est. pop. 404,000), S Kazakhstan, on the Turkistan-Siberia RR. It has large zinc and lead smelters and machine, chemical, and food-processing industries. Founded in the 12th cent., Shymkent was a Kokand fortress before it was taken by Russia in 1864.

 or Chimkent

City (pop., 1999 est.: 360,100), south-central Kazakhstan. It lies at an elevation of 1,680 ft (512 m) in the foothills of the Ugam Range, north of Tashkent. Originally a settlement on the caravan route from Central Asia to China, it dates to at least the 12th century AD. Destroyed by nomad attacks several times, it became part of the khanate of Qo'qon in the early 19th century and was annexed by the Russian Empire in 1864. It lies on the Turkistan-Siberian Railroad, and its population grew dramatically in the 20th century. It is now an industrial and cultural centre.

The Inkai deposit is located in south central Kazakhstan, about 370 kilometres northwest of the regional capital of Shymkent and some 1,000 kilometres northwest of Almaty.
The first stage of the CDMA deployment in Kazakhstan includes the simultaneous launch of Altel's new network in the following 14 cities covered by Altel's network: Almaty, Astana, Karaganda, Temirtau, Ust-Kamenogorsk, Pavlodar, Kostanay, Aktobe, Atyrtau, Petropavlovsk, Shymkent, Kyzylorda, Taraz and Kapchay.
