(redirected from Sibari)

Also found in: Dictionary/thesaurus, Wikipedia 0.01 sec.
Sybaris (sĭb`ərĭs), ancient city of Magna Graecia, S Italy, in Bruttium, on the Gulf of Tarentum (now Taranto). It was founded in 720 B.C. by Achaeans and people from Argolis, the Troezenians. It became a wealthy Greek city, and its inhabitants were reputed to live voluptuous lives, hence the word sybaritic. The Troezenians, ejected by the Achaeans, obtained the help of neighboring Crotona and destroyed the city in 510 B.C. Thurii was supposedly built on the site.

Sybaris

Ancient Greek city, southern Italy, on the Gulf of Tarentum. Founded c. 720 BC by Achaeans and known for its wealth and luxury (hence, the English word sybarite), it was one of the oldest cities of Magna Graecia. Twice razed by the Crotoniates (510 BC and c. 448 BC), it attempted rebuilding and relocating but never regained its importance.

Sybaris

Sybaris

an ancient Greek colony on the Gulf of Tarentum (Taranto), in Italy. Founded in approximately 720 B.C. by Achaeans, Sybaris was an important trade center in the seventh and sixth centuries B.C. Its inhabitants, according to ancient historical tradition, had a reputation for wealth and love of luxury, which accounts today for the meaning of the word “sybarite.” In 510 B.C., during the war with the city of Croton, the colony was totally destroyed. In approximately 443 B.C. the city of Thurii was built near the site of Sybaris.
