In south-central MN, southwest of Minneapolis; established Mar 5, 1853 (prior to statehood) from unorganized lands. Name Origin: For Henry Hastings Sibley (1811-91), delegate to the U.S. Congress from WI territory (1848-49) and from MN Territory (1849-53), and first governor of MN (1858-60).

Area (sq mi): 600.41 (land 588.65; water 11.76). Pop per sq mi: 25.90.
Pop 2005: 15,237. State rank: 58. Pop change: 2000-20005 -0.80%; 1990-2000 6.90%. Pop 2000: 15,356 (White 93.40%; Black or African American 0.10%; Hispanic or Latino 5.40%; Asian 0.30%; Other 4.00%). Foreign born: 2.60%. Median age: 37.30.
