Size: 1,300,000 acres.
Location: East-central California. Accessible by CA 41, 168, and 180. Nearby cities/towns include Fresno and North Fork.
Facilities: 71 campgrounds, 11 group camps, dispersed camping, picnic areas, trails, winter sports areas, ski resort, scenic drives.
Activities: Camping, fishing, boating, canoeing, sailing, whitewater rafting, swimming, water-skiing, windsurfing, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, hunting, OHV riding, cross-country and downhill skiing, snowmobiling, sledding, dog sledding, snow playing.
Special Features: Sierra Vista Scenic Byway, a 100-mile open loop through the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range; five designated wilderness areas: Ansel Adams, Dinkey Lake, John Muir, Kaiser, and Monarch; Globe Rock, an improbably large granite sphere perched precariously, with the appearance that it will roll off at any time. Forest property abuts the southern boundary of Yosemite National Park (see entry in national parks section).
