Signorini, Telemaco

Born Aug. 18, 1835, in Florence; died there Feb. 10, 1901. Italian painter and graphic artist; leader of the macchiaioli (seeMACCHIAIOLI).

Signorini studied at the school of the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence. He joined G. Mazzini’s revolutionary circle in 1853 and in 1859 took part in Garibaldi’s campaign. Striving to bring his art close to modern life, Signorini depicted military events, scenes from the people’s life and work, city and rural landscapes, and genre scenes. His manner of painting was sweeping and emotional. His works include In the San Bonifacio Madhouse (1865, National Gallery of Modern Art, Rome) and The Lace Makers (1890’s, private collection, Rome).
