a city and center of Šilutė Raion, Lithuanian SSR. Situated on the Šyša River, a right tributary of the Nemunas River, 50 km southeast of Klaipeda. Railroad station on the Klaipèda-Pagégiai line. Industrial enterprises include the Gidroprivod plant, a furniture combine, a logging and timber distribution establishment, a peat-blocking enterprise, a distillery, a cheese plant, and the textile factory of the Drobè Kaunas Production Association. The city also has a sovkhoz technicum and a museum of local lore.
