Silverman, Sydel (1933– ) anthropologist; born in Chicago. Educated at the University of Chicago and Columbia University (Ph.D. 1963), she taught at Queens College in New York City before becoming president of the Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research in 1987. A specialist in Italian peasant society, she is the author of Peasant Society: A Reader (1965) and Three Bells of Civilization: The Life of an Italian Hill Town (1975).
