Simeon or Symeon (both: sĭm`ēŏn), in the Bible. 1 Second son of Jacob and Leah and ancestor of the southernmost tribe of Israel. He and his tribe are seldom mentioned individually. 2 Devout man who blessed Jesus when He was presented in the Temple. He uttered Nunc dimittis Nunc dimittis (nŭngk dĭmĭt`ĭs) [Lat. 3 Simeon Niger, early Christian, prominent in Antioch. In chapter 15 of the Acts of the Apostles, Simeon appears for the usual Simon, referring to St. Peter. Simeon 1. a. Old Testament the second son of Jacob and Leah b. the tribe descended from him c. the territory once occupied by this tribe in the extreme south of the land of Canaan 2. New Testament a devout Jew, who recognized the infant Jesus as the Messiah and uttered the canticle Nunc Dimittis over him in the Temple (Luke 2:25--35) Simeon recognizes young Jesus as messiah.
