Simferpol’, University of
(full name, M. V. Frunze University of Simferopol’), a university organized in 1972 as a successor to the Crimean Pedagogical Institute, which had been founded in 1925 during the reorganization of the Tavrida (Crimean) University (1918–25). Scholars and scientists associated at various times with the university include A. A. Baikov, V. I. Vernadskii, B. D. Grekov, A. F. Ioffe, N. M. Krylov, G. F. Morozov, V. A. Obruchev, V. I. Palladin, and I. E. Tamm. Students included I. V. Kurchatov and K. I. Shchelkin. The University of Simferopol’ has (1975) departments of physics, mathematics, natural sciences, geography, history, philology, Romance and Germanic philology, and physical education. There are evening and correspondence divisions and a preparatory division for certain categories of entering students. The university has 43 subdepartments, a computer center, a zoological museum, and a geographical and biological training station. The library contains more than 700,000 books and periodicals. In the 1974—75 academic year, enrollment was 5,700, and there were more than 300 instructors, including 22 professors and doctors of sciences and 165 docents and candidates of sciences.
