Simpson, Joanne Malkus

Simpson, Joanne Malkus (1923–  ) meteorologist; born in Boston, Mass. The first woman to receive a Ph.D. in meteorology (1949), she studied with Carl-Gustaf Rossby at the University of Chicago and trained military forecasters during World War II. Her award-winning research on cumulus clouds and weather modification took her around the country. Her home-base was the Goddard Space Flight Center/NASA since 1979; she was chief scientist for meteorology from 1988.
