Pelusium (pĭl `shēəm), ancient city of Egypt, on the easternmost branch of the Nile (long since silted up) and c.20 mi (30 km) E of modern Port Said. It was especially important as a frontier fortress against attacks from the east. The Assyrians under Sennacherib were supposedly struck by pestilence at Pelusium, and in 525 B.C. the Persians under Cambyses overthrew Psamtik III there. There are Roman remains on the site. It is mentioned in the Bible under the name Sin.PelusiumAncient Egyptian city. Located on what was once the easternmost mouth of the Nile River, its ruins lay southeast of modern Port Said. Beginning in the 26th dynasty (c. 7th century BC), it was the main frontier fortress facing Palestine and was a customs post for Asian goods. In 525 BC the Achaemenian Persians, under Cambyses II, defeated the pharaoh Psamtik III there. In Roman times it was a station on the trade route to the Red Sea; its ruins date from the Roman period.
