Singer, S. J. (Seymour Jonathan) (1924–  ) cell biologist; born in New York City. He was a research fellow at the California Institute of Technology (1947–48), worked for the U.S. Public Health Service (1948–51), moved to Yale (1951–61), then joined the University of California: San Diego (1961). He made major contributions to the physical chemistry of proteins (including antibodies), membrane biology, and chemical cytology.
