Songkhla 

a city in Thailand, on the eastern shore of the Malay Peninsula. Population, 36,300 (1964). Songkhla is a cabotage port, trade center, and fishing port.

They put to sea under the command of Admiral Sir Tom Phillips, with the intention of surprising the Japanese at Singora, near the Malayan border.
Japanese forces swept down the peninsula within days of the December 8, 1941 landings on the beaches of Singora and Pattani in southern Thailand and in Kota Bharu in Malaysia's northern Kelantan state.
Still further north, the main Japanese invasion force of 14 ships neared Singora.
