Brangwyn, Frank

Born May 13, 1867, in Bruges, Belgium; died June 11, 1956, in Ditchling, Sussex. English painter and graphic artist.

Brangwyn was a student of W. Morris. His work is dynamic, decorative, and dramatically expressive and shows a keen sense of modern life. In paintings, panels, and especially in large-scale etchings (Carpenters, 1904; The Building of a Ship and The Tower Bridge, 1913) he depicted the life of the peoples of many nations, the nobility and the difficulty of labor, and the stern majesty of European cities and of modern industry. Brangwyn’s lithographs and posters on the theme of World War I are permeated with a spirit of passionate antimilitary protest.
