Sizov, Vladimir Il’ich
Born 1840 in Moscow; died there Oct. 19 (Nov. 1), 1904. Russian archaeologist. Sizov was one the founders of the Historical Museum in Moscow and served as secretary of the museum from 1881 until his death. His principal works dealt with Slavic and Russian archaeology. Sizov directed the excavation of the Gnezdovo burial mounds, the D’iakovo gorodishche (site of a fortified town), and many other archaeological sites. In the late 1890’s he discovered the long barrows along the upper Dnieper River. WORKSKurgany Smolenskoigubernii, fasc. 1.
