In northwestern WA, bordered on west by upper Puget Sound, north of Seattle. Organized Nov 28, 1883 (prior to statehood) from Whatcom County. Name Origin: For the Indian tribe; meaning of name is unknown.

Area (sq mi): 1920.47 (land 1735.14; water 185.33). Pop per sq mi: 65.20.
Pop 2005: 113,171. State rank: 11. Pop change: 2000-20005 9.90%; 1990-2000 29.40%. Pop 2000: 102,979 (White 83.00%; Black or African American 0.40%; Hispanic or Latino 11.20%; Asian 1.50%; Other 11.70%). Foreign born: 8.80%. Median age: 37.20.
