On the southern border of WA, northeast of Portland, OR; organized Mar 9, 1854 (prior to statehood) from Clark County. Name Origin: From the Indian name for parts of the Columbia River, which forms the county's southern border. The usual interpretation is 'swift water.'

Area (sq mi): 1683.86 (land 1656.44; water 27.42). Pop per sq mi: 6.40.
Pop 2005: 10,664. State rank: 34. Pop change: 2000-20005 8.00%; 1990-2000 19.10%. Pop 2000: 9,872 (White 90.40%; Black or African American 0.30%; Hispanic or Latino 4.00%; Asian 0.50%; Other 7.00%). Foreign born: 3.50%. Median age: 38.70.
Income 2000: per capita $18,002; median household $39,317; Pop below poverty level: 13.10%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $22,445-$22,758.
Unemployment 2004: 8.60%. Change from 2000: -2.50%. Median travel time to work: 29.20 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 52.30%.
