Skara (skä`rä'), city (1990 pop. 10,790), Skaraborg co., S Sweden. Situated in a farming region, it has industries that manufacture metal goods and footwear. Dating from at least the 9th cent., Skara is one of Sweden's oldest cities; the country's first bishopric was established there in the 11th cent. The city has also been an educational center since 1641, when Sweden's earliest institutions of higher learning were founded there. Skara has an imposing cathedral (12th cent.; restored 1894).

In a unique move of appropriation, Henry VIII's Wives (a group consisting of artists Bob Grieve, Rachel Dagnall, Sirko Knupfer, Simon Polli, Per Sander, and Lucy Skaer) have reconstructed the Neolithic Orkney village of Skara Brae, complete with burial house, residential areas, and a communal workshop.
If children are having trouble coming up with a setting, you might suggest such books as Stone Age Farmers Beside the Sea: Scotland's Prehistoric Village of Skara Brae, by Caroline Arnold (Clarion Books, 1997); Wild West Shows: Rough Riders and Sure Shots, by Judy Alter (Watts, 1997); and Children of Guatemala, by Jules Hermes (Lerner, 1997).
Skara Brae lay buried for more than four millenniums beside the Bay of Skaill on the western tip of the Orkney ``Mainland'' in remote northern Scotland.
