Skellefteälven (shĕlĕf`təĕlv'ĕn), river, c.255 mi (410 km) long, rising in Norrbotten co., N Sweden, in the mountains along the Norwegian border. It flows SE through Uddjaur lake (30 mi/48 km long; 92 sq mi/238 sq km) to the Gulf of Bothnia at Skelleftehamn. The river traverses a rich copper- and gold-mining region near Boliden and Kristineberg; Skellefteå Skellefteå , city (1990 pop. 31,050), Västerbotten co., NE Sweden, on the Skellefteälven River inland from its mouth on the Gulf of Bothnia. Skellefteälven 

a river in northern Sweden. The Skellefteälven is 410 km long and drains an area of 11,600 sq km. It issues from Lake Ikesjaure near the border of Sweden and Norway and flows from northwest to southeast along the Norrland Plateau. The river passes through a series of lakes, including Hornavan, Uddjaur, and Storavan, and forms rapids and waterfalls. In its lower course it flows through the coastal plain and empties into the Gulf of Bothnia of the Baltic Sea.

The Skellefteälven is fed primarily by snow; the water level is high in summer and low in winter. The mean flow rate is approximately 160 eu m per sec. The river is used for floating timber. A series of hydroelectric power plants is located on the Skellefteälven. The seaport of Skellefteå is situated on the river near its mouth.
