ski jumping |
Also found in: Wikipedia | 0.01 sec. |
ski jumpingSkiing event in which contestants ski down a steep ramp curved upward at the end and launch themselves into the air for distance. Using a crouch position, skiers can achieve ramp speeds of 75 mi (120 km) per hour. After takeoff, they lean far forward from the ankles with knees straight and skis held open at the tips to form a V, a position that minimizes wind resistance and maximizes lift. Scoring is based partly on distance and partly on form. How to thank TFD for its existence? They include Zaha Hadid's ski-jumping slope on a hilltop, housing schemes by Baumschlager & Eberle (AR June 2001), the soon to be completed central train station by Riegler Riewe, and Dominique Perrault's town hall (see later in this issue)--a unique mixed-use complex, including shopping mall and hotel, which brings a new urban scale to the inner city. The championships, to be held at the Big Thunder National Ski Training Centre, will feature competition in ski-jumping, cross-country and combined, with athletes from 50 countries competing. Stay nearby the slopes in the city of Lake Placid and ride the Olympic Bobsled and Luge Run ($15), take a tour of the Olympic ski jumping complex, which includes a ride in a glass elevator 26 stories high to the site of the ski-jumping tower ($5), or go skating in the Olympic ice arenas ($2). |
