Skien (shē`ən, shā`ən), city (1995 pop. 48,341), capital of Telemark co., SE Norway, a port on the Skienselva River and on the Telemark Canal. Manufactures include forest products and processed food. NORSKE SKOG, Lysaker, Norway, will close the Norske Skog Union mill in Skien, south of Oslo, during the first quarter of 2006 following acceptance by Norske Skog's board of directors to a recommendation from the management team. In 1856, a local postmaster, Jacob Gldersen, had to resign from his position when he became a member of the Covenant Free Church in Skien, and the Parliament reduced his pension.
