Skliaev, Fedosei Moiseevich 

Date of birth unknown; died May 10(21), 1728. Russian shipbuilder.

In 1696, Skliaev worked as an apprentice to a shipwright. In 1697, with a group of 30 volunteers, he studied shipbuilding in Amsterdam; in 1698 he worked in Venice. Peter I entrusted Skliaev with the construction of the most important ships, including the Predestinatsiia, Narva, and Fridemaker. Under a special assignment from Peter, Skliaev directed the raising of the submerged ship Lesnoi in 1719. In 1707 he achieved the rank of lieutenant and the title of master shipwright (naval engineer). In 1709 he was promoted to captain, and in 1723 to commodore. Skliaev fought in the battle of Poltava.
