Skrinskii, Aleksandr Nikolaevich 

Born Jan. 15, 1936, in Orenburg. Soviet physicist. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1970; corresponding member, 1968).

In 1959, Skrinskii graduated from Moscow State University and joined the staff of the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Siberian Division of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. In addition to his work at the institute, he has been a professor at the University of Novosibirsk since 1967.

Skrinskii’s principal work has been in high-energy physics and the physics and technology of charged-particle accelerators. Together with other workers, he developed the method of colliding beams. The Lenin Prize was awarded for this achievement in 1967. He developed and built apparatus for electron-electron and electron-positron colliding beams and carried out experiments with this apparatus. Skrinskii is the author of theoretical and experimental works on the stability and interaction of beams of charged particles, the obtaining of polarized particles in accumulators, the application of X-ray synchrotron radiation, and the development of a method of electronic cooling used primarily for the storing of antiprotons.

Skrinskii has been awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor.
