(SkyTel Corporation, Jackson, MS, www.skytel.com) The first nationwide paging service, founded in 1988. It was also the first to integrate voice messaging (dial up and receive the message) as well as alphanumeric text into the pager. The company was purchased by MCI Worldcom in 1999 and operates as a wholly-owned subsidiary of MCI.
