Slater, John C. (Clarke) (1900–76) physicist; born in Oak Park, Ill. He taught and performed research at Harvard (1924–30), where he introduced a determinantal wave function for multielectron systems. At the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1930–66), he pursued fundamental research on magnetron design. In the 1950s and 1960s, he returned to quantum mechanical studies of molecular and solid-state theory. His last academic position was at the University of Florida (1964–76).
