Slavianov, Nikolai Nikolaevich
Born June 1(13), 1878, in the settlement of Votkinskii Zavod, in what is now the Udmurt ASSR; died Oct. 16, 1958, in Moscow. Soviet hydro-geologist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1946). Son of N. G. Slavianov. Slavianov graduated from the Institute of Mines in St. Petersburg in 1908, after which he worked on the Geological Committee until 1933. He was on the staff of the Institute of Geological Sciences of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR from 1933 to 1946. Slavianov was director of the F. P. Savarenskii Laboratory of Hydrogeological Problems of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR from 1947 to 1956. He was a professor at many institutions of higher learning in Moscow, Leningrad, and Khabarovsk. Slavianov’s principal works dealt with the study of the mineral waters of the USSR, including their chemical composition and classification. Slavianov studied mineral springs in the Caucasus, the Altai, the Tien-Shan, and other regions. A spring in Zheleznovodsk was named in his honor.
