Slonimskii, Sergei Mikhailovich 

Born Aug. 12, 1932, in Leningrad. Soviet composer, pianist, and musicologist.

Slonimskii graduated in 1955 from the Leningrad Conservatory, where he studied composition under O. A. Evlakhov and piano under V. V. Nil’sen. He has taught at the conservatory since 1958. Slonimskii’s principal works include the opera Virineia (1967), based on a work by L. N. Seifullina; the opera The Master and Margarita (1970–72), based on the novel by M. A. Bulgakov; the ballet Icarus (1971); the cantata A Voice From the Chorus (1964), with words by A. A. Blok: a symphony (1958); Concerto buffo for chamber orchestra (1966); Antiphones for string quartet (1968); cycles of vocal pieces; and a piano sonata.
