SmartSockets
Middleware from TIBCO Software Inc., Palo Alto, CA (www.tibco.com) that runs on various platforms and provides a publish and subscribe capability for a distributed computing environment. IP multicast, ActiveX support and real-time monitoring of network applications are key features. SmartSockets was originally developed by Talarian Corporation, acquired in 2002 by TIBCO.

As a result of the agreement, Compaq will partner with Talarian, including selling and supporting Talarian's SmartSockets solution worldwide as part of the Compaq ZLE architecture, expanding the availability of Talarian's software in markets where systems require real time access to business-critical data and the highest levels of availability and scalability.
By acquiring Talarian and its SmartSockets product, Tibco "effectively neutralises the only competitor to its Rendezvous product", say analysts at Gartner.
This transition, which resulted in the replacement of the TIBCO SmartSockets product, enables NYMEX to support massive volumes of orders, price prints and trades including up to 1.
