emoticon (EMOTional ICON) Also called a "smiley" or "smiley face," it is an expression of emotion typed into a message using standard keyboard characters. The following examples are viewed sideways. Tilt your head down toward your left shoulder. Carnegie Mellon professor Scott Fahlman is credited with the first smiley face in an online message in 1982.Today, tilting one's head to get the meaning is no longer necessary. Quite often, word processing, instant messaging, e-mail and other text-oriented programs automatically convert emoticon text into a graphic, especially the basic happy face. In addition, an application may even include a palette of smiley icons to choose from. For an extensive list of more than 650 emoticons, read "Smileys" by David Sanderson, published by O'Reilly & Associates, Inc. See emotag and alphanumerish.
