Smederevo (smĕ`dĕrĕvô), town (1991 pop. 63,884), NE Serbia, a port on the Danube River. Its industries include oil refining and steel manufacturing. Wine is produced in the surrounding region. Dating from Roman times, Smederevo was the capital of Serbia in the 15th cent. A fortress built in 1429 and taken by the Turks in 1456 still stands.
Smederevo a city in Yugoslavia, in the Socialist Republic of Serbia; located southeast of Belgrade, on the right bank of the Danube. Population, 42,000 (1974). Industries include metallurgy (plant reconstructed with the cooperation of the USSR), machine building (in particular, construction machinery), and food processing (especially winemaking and flour milling).
