Smičiklas, Tade 

Born Oct. 1, 1843, in Reštovo, Žumberak; died June 8, 1914, in Zagreb. Croatian historian and public figure.

After graduating from the Gymnasium in Zagreb in 1863, Smičiklas studied in the faculty of philosophy at the universities of Prague and Vienna. In 1869 he became a teacher of history and geography, and from 1873 to 1882 he taught at the Gymnasiums in Rijeka and Zagreb. From 1882 to 1905 he was professor of Croatian history at the University of Zagreb. In 1883 Smičiklas was admitted to the Yugoslav Academy of Sciences and Arts in Zagreb; in 1889 he became the academy’s secretary. From 1889 to 1900 he was president of the literary and scholarly society Matica Hrvatska. In the years 1884–87 and 1897-1902, he was a deputy to the Croatian Sabor (parliament). In 1904, Smičiklas began publication of a collection of Latin documents on the history of medieval Croatia, Dalmatia, and Slavonia entitled Codex diplomatics regni Croatiae, Dalmatiae et Slavoniae.
