Smillie, James (1807–85) engraver; born in Edinburgh, Scotland. He emigrated with his family to Quebec, Canada (1821), studied engraving in London (1827), and settled in New York City (1829). He is known for his steel engravings of paintings, such as The Voyage of Life series by Thomas Cole (1839–40).
