Smillie, Wilson George (1886–1971) epidemiologist; born in Eaton, Colo. He established the first school for public health in South America under the auspices of the Rockefeller Foundation (1917–27), and lost his first wife to the influenza epidemic in Brazil while working there. After ten years at the Harvard School of Public Health (1927–37), he joined Cornell University Medical College (1937–55), and on retiring, published the influential Public Health—Its Promise for the Future (1955).
