Smirnov, Aleksei Petrovich
Born May 29 (June 10), 1899, in Moscow; died there Mar. 10, 1974. Soviet archaeologist and historian. Doctor of historical sciences (1944). Member of the CPSU from 1953. Smirnov began working at the Institute of Archaeology of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in 1932, and in the years 1951-55 he was a professor at Moscow State University. His research was devoted primarily to the archaeology and history of the Volga and Kama regions. Of the large-scale archaeological excavations he directed, particular importance is attached to those of the cities of Bulgaria on the Volga, especially the capital—Bulgar.
