Smirnov, Vasilii Dmitrievich
Born July 28 (Aug. 9), 1846, in the village of Biriuch’ia Kosa, in what is now Liman Raion, Astrakhan Oblast; died May 25, 1922, in Petrograd. Russian orientalist. Specialist in the history and literature of Turkey. In 1873, Smirnov became a docent and in 1884 a professor in the faculty of Oriental languages of the University of St. Petersburg. His works established Turkish studies as an independent discipline within the field of Turkic studies in Russia.
